Aspartate Aminotransferase

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme found in various organs, including the liver, heart, and muscles. A blood test for AST is used to detect liver damage or disease. Elevated levels of AST in the blood can indicate liver damage or disease, but can also be caused by other factors such as muscle injury. The test is commonly used as part of a liver function panel to diagnose and monitor liver disease.
